Opening for Beverly Glenn-Copeland at East End United Church, Toronto. December 2025. Photographer Green Yang.

A single from the Shift Circuit cycle. Black Gaze is a study in texture and refusal, taking its name from Tina M. Campt's A Black Gaze (MIT Press, 2021), which names the practice of looking with the weight, refusal, and intimacy of Black study rather than being looked at through the white gaze. The song lives in that turning. Texture as method. Refusal as form. The cover sits in the same field as the rest of Shift Circuit, a 2024 album about sentience and ferality.

Bio

Rootmouth (b. 1992, Minneapolis) is a body of work artist whose practice is cultural marooning. They meander fields of perception and practice honest withdrawal as protection.

Their work takes the form of singing and writing songs, initiating ears at dirt level, hosting fugitive space, and stewarding land that belongs to the people of the waters that are never still.

They work in biodynamic time, set to the rhythms of the moon. Their work moves through registers that filter, shape, and present from the root of things, organized by a self-made framework that channels through the gut, ground and sky, keeping their practice on alternate transits programmed to be disobedient to the dominant clock.
